Term 3 Week 4: Art Icon

WALT locate and summarise ideas

Art icon

By Phillip Simpson
Dick Frizzell has made an icon of himself...
Dick Frizzell is always on the hunt. He’s keeping his eyes open for the next ‘Frizzell’—a fish-tin label, a kink in a rural road, a cluster of sale signs on a fruit stall. A cultural magpie at large, Frizzell has carved a niche by painting icons of New Zealand life—overlooked motifs that, once identified, instantly become part of what we all recognise as Kiwiana.

Now 69, Frizzell has painted still lifes, pop culture, landscapes, children’s books—a seemingly haphazard collection of media and subjects that he insists has a central theme. By identifying cultural icons from the clutter of our everyday life, Frizzell says his work sparks a relationship with the viewer.
“I like that little flash of recognition. It’s that connection that people want; they want to feel connected. And they want the connection to be personal and real,” he says. “They see some kind of cheerful affirmation of their environment, where they live. They think, ‘Oh yeah, New Zealand’s cool’, and I’m happy with that.”

Frizzell grew up barefoot in Hawke’s Bay, cycling between haunts in Hastings—the swimming pool, the sawmill, out to the river and the picture theatre.
“My father was an engineer at the freezing works and would bring home meat, and take me rabbit shooting in the weekends,” he says. “As I grew up and read Kiwi literature, you begin to realise that you have had this kind of iconic upbringing. I think it puts you in a position where you feel comfortable to comment.”

By the time he left art school at Canterbury University, he and his wife, Jude, had a daughter, so Frizzell began his art career determined to make a living from it. First in advertising, for seven years, then painting. He began with a series of successful exhibitions, painting humorous self-portraits, and everyday objects such as fish-tin labels.
At the age of 44, Frizzell experienced a sort of midlife painter’s block. In desperation, he turned to the New Zealand landscape—in particular, to the scenes of his boyhood. The works he produced over the next four years proved as popular with the public as they were in the art world, “working in effect exactly as I’d hoped they would”, says Frizzell, “helping a new generation re-see their world”.

In 1990, he turned to New Zealand’s cultural landscape, producing a series of works around the Maori adornment, hei tiki. His exhibition included 29 paintings, 25 works on paper and three sculptural pieces, all riffing on the well-known symbol in Frizzell’s bold colours and stark, graphical style.
“I think part of what an artist is meant to do is awaken people’s awareness of their environment. It’s like keeping people’s eyes open,” he says.

“I paint to succeed, I hate to tell you, I don’t paint to fail,” he says. “I’m a serious painter.”
In his perpetual quest to identify icons that New Zealanders can relate to, he has created an iconic status for himself as well.

WALT Locate and Summarise Ideas

  1. Select 5 keywords from this article: hei tiki, New Zealand, Art, Kiwiana, Icon.

Success criteria: key words sum up the meaning. They are often nouns (but not always)

  1. Explain why you chose to learn about Dick Frizzell in three or four sentences. What made you interested in him? I actually always wanted to learn about an artist, even though i’m not that good at art.  I’ve heard of him, so when I heard
that he was one of the literacy groups, I chose him. I got even more interested when I saw Mickey To Tiki.

  1. Vocabulary: for these words, share a meaning in your own words and find a dictionary meaning

Term 3 Week 2 - Art Description

This is my Art Description. We were learning about the four Arts: Visual Art, Dance, Music and Drama. We had to do a picture representing an art. We (Me, Oscar and Bodie) choose music.

Me, Oscar and Bodie did a 3D harmonica in the middle of the page and it is green and brown. We also did flutes on the corners. We used yellow paint on the sides to make it look better. Above the 3D harmonica, we made a yellow music note, to make it look like it was coming out of the Harmonica.FullSizeRender.jpg

Holiday Post - Antarctic Centre

The Penguins from underneath the water.
The Penguins at Ground Level.
The 4D Theatre.
The Storm Room.
Finally, we arrived!  It seemed like forever to get from my Granddad's house to the Antarctic Centre.  Me, My mum, my Granddad and Daphne got out of the car and followed the footsteps to the front door.  Once we paid to get in we went into a mini ice cave. After a photo, we went into a dark room with snow falling (Actually it wasn't real snow. It was holograms).   In the corner of the room there was a fake transport thingy that people use to drive in the snow.  Inside it, there was video of man talking about something.  I think that was the creepiest room.  After that, we went into a hall.  Through a couple of windows, you could see a room filled with snow(Again, it wasn't snow, it was Ice).  Above one window it said "NEXT STORM IN 5 MINUTES".  Mum said that it was like a real Antarctic Storm.  To go in there, you had to put on some rubber boots and a Antarctic Jacket.  When we went inside, it slightly got colder and colder until it was -22 Degrees Celsius!  When the storm was over, my face and the rest of my body were fine, but my hands were practically Ice!  Just across from the storm room there was a table connected to the wall with  two holes.  Above those holes, on the wall, was a sign saying "How long can you put your hands in Antarctic water?".  I put my hands in the two holes.  By golly, It was cold!  On my first turn, my hands survived for 13 seconds.  On my second... 32 Seconds!  Down the hall from the storm room, was a 4D Theatre.  The next short movie was in half an hour.  Mum suggested that we just wait in line.  But I did not want to stand still for half an hour.  I said to mum that I would look at the penguins.  She decided to come with me.  There were 4 views of penguins.  1: Above the water 2: Beneath the water 3: At ground Level.  By the time we were finished, there was only 5 minutes to go.  Anyway, the 4D movie was called Ice Voyage.  By the time it was done, I was soaking(4D is like 3D, how stuff seems to pop out of the screen.  But also, it sprays water air and all that stuff).  After the short movie, we left the Antarctic Centre.

Week 9: Mystery Man Part 3

Part 3: The Night Of Terror.
Three ultra sharp discs came flying out of nowhere.  Mystery Man saw them coming.  Luckily, he was very athletic.  He ducked under the first one,  hurdled over the second and hit the third away with his shield.
“Was that an accident or something?“ wondered Mystery Man.
After he rang the doorbell to Mr Mysteryhutter’s door, BANG!  AN ENORMOUS sledgehammer came out of Mr Mysteryhutter’s door and started to fall forwards.  Mystery Man slid across the floor and then hit the steel wall.  Mr Mysterhutter came out of his office to look who had rung the ridiculous doorbell. He shook his head and turned to go inside his office.  But suddenly his eye caught sight of Mystery Man out cold in the corner.  Mr Mysteryhutter nodded his head and smiled.  Half an hour later Mystery Man woke up to find himself face to face with Mr Mysteryhutter in his office.
“What happened Mystery Man?” asked Mr Mysteryhutter.
“Why does your door have a sledgehammer?”
“Oh, I forget to take off the emergency doorbell,” said Mr Mysteryhutter, slowly taking something out of his pocket and putting on the floor…
Suddenly the room filled up with smoke from Mr Mysteryhutter’s smoke bomb.  In a flash Mr Mysteryhutter was out the room, locking the door behind him.  Mystery Man ran to the door, but it was locked of course.  Mystery Man frowned.  But then he had a light bulb moment.  Meanwhile Mr Mysteryhutter was thinking, “he should be dead by now”.  Suddenly… BANG!!!  The door fell into pieces as Mystery Man smashed through the wall with his hammer.  Mr Mysteryhutter gasped and then did something very surprising.  Slowly he put his hands to his head and TOOK OFF HIS HELMET.  Mystery Man got up from the pile of bricks and gaped at Mr Mysteryhutter in surprise.  “You look very familiar” said Mystery Man.
“Yesssss,” said Mr Mysteryhutter.  “ I planned this ever since you joined Armitage.  My name is…”.  He took a deep breath.  “... Oscar Taylor-Gee”.
“OSCAR!” screeched Mystery Man.
“When you froze me at school, my heart would've been frozen for 15 years.  But I was rebuilt in hospital.  That is how I became evil.  I zapped Tom with yekstolasfro abbagoldess which turned him evil”.
The terrible truth suddenly dawned on Mystery Man.  All of a sudden Mystery Man jumped on to his feet, punched Mr Mysteryhutter and ran to the main exit.  Only Zonoz stood in his way.  Zonoz was a tiny man, possibly only 1.55 metres tall.  Meanwhile Mystery Man was 2.00 metres.  Suddenly Zonoz ripped his shirt and started to sprout.  Mystery Man stood frozen to the spot.  When Zonoz had finished growing, he was 3.55 metres.
“Holy Moly,” said Mystery Man.
Zonoz jumped 5 feet in the air and and held on to a light.  Mystery Man just walked past.  When Mystery Man was exactly underneath Zonoz, Zonoz let go of the light and dropped to the ground.  SMACK!  When Zonoz stood up, there was deep deep hole in the ground.
Mr Mysteryhutter walked to where Zonoz was and said, “Where’s Mystery Man?”
Zonoz just shrugged his shoulders, which were the size of boulders.
“Here I am!” shouted Mystery Man jumping down from the same light Zonoz had been holding on to.  He landed on the ground, put his shield into ultra sharp mode and swiped at Zonoz.  Zonoz suddenly stood up straight.  Then with an enormous BANG! he fell to the ground.
“Okay,” said Mr Mysteryhutter. ”You've done it now”.

Week 8: Product Design

I'm Blogging this because it is a product that made up by myself and it is so cool
We were learning to make a product and make it as if it was a real life ad.

Voice Activated Car, Boat or Plane.

Are you wanting something (For an example, a milkshake) but you know your hundreds of KMs away?  Well, worry no more!  The Voice activated Car (Boat and plane) are here!  To get what you want, all you have to do is press the button on  the end of the slip.  The slip is a little metal disk that you insert into the hatch when you want your car voice activated.  Anyway, after you have pressed the button, Just say whatever you want and… Ka-Ching!  Out it comes!  Your stuff is made in the nose of the car, with little mechanic arms.  When you say your wish, the disk scans your voice and sends through to the arms.  So have a happy time!
